What is Live Awake Mentoring?

Live Awake Mentoring is a clear and simple path to living free and in alignment with truth. It comes from Robear's direct experience, deep care for others’ liberation, honest frustration with the spiritual marketplace, and decades of hands-on teaching experience. It is not self-improvement, therapy, or life-coaching.
This approach is about recognizing and embodying truth through direct experience, requires no belief, and offers support in a way that is:
-
Accessible to those unfamiliar with awakening—without sacrificing its potency.
-
Structured enough to support long-term deepening.
-
Flexible enough to be led by Presence.
Live Awake Mentoring is a living invitation to all to awaken from the mind to reality, and to live what matters most.
-
An approach to guide people into seeing the difference between reality and their interpretation of reality—so they can perceive and live with more clarity.
-
Help them to deepen their insight by mastering the art and skill of living awake.
-
Support them in an ongoing, grounded, lasting integration—so the knowing of truth becomes their lived experience.
Live Awake Mentoring:
-
Cultivates an environment where people can be met without pressure, and deepen their involvement as they are ready.
-
Nourishes people right where they are through group experiences such as Live Awake Meetings and Essence Relating Circles.
-
Provides stepping stones into deeper practice through multi-week and one-year programs—and one-on-one guidance.
-
Ultimately supports the emergence of mentors and communities who embody the skills and values of this offering, so the essence of Live Awake Mentoring can thrive and serve beyond any one person.
At this time, Robear is the guide, but there is no guru—it’s about reality waking up to itself in everyone, as everyone.
What's Different About Live Awake Mentoring?

What you may notice that is different from other spiritual approaches are the following seven key elements:
1. It's a practical, body-centered, direct-experience approach that uses awareness to both stabilize the nervous system and awaken to reality.
2. Helps you awaken from your mind first—usually in your first session—so you can experience reality directly, beyond the filter of interpretation. For living what matters most, Live Awake Mentoring sees awakening from the mind to reality as a lead domino. This means that doing so has a domino-like effect that makes many things that were believed to be important, unnecessary, and many other things easier. While awakening from the mind is not the same as enlightenment, it is part of it. It's also remarkable how much clarity and efficiency it brings to the journey of fulfilling your spiritual longing—as well as tending to the matters of everyday life. It's also more simple than most realize.
3. Approaches awakening as a skill that can be learned by the many instead of a mystery reserved for the few. While Grace plays the primary role, awakening is still within your influence and does not necessarily require decades of study or arduous practice. The result is that those who work with Live Awake Mentoring usually go from being seekers to finders—sooner than later.
4. Focuses more on the realizing and embodying of truth rather than the methods. Yes, methods are important, but they are not the "destination." Since Live Awake Mentoring approaches awakening as a skill, it is important to remember that while the skills are essential, they are not what matter most. What matters most is the realization of your true nature, your deepest spiritual longing, and living the freedom and fulfillment this recognition brings. Teachings, tools, techniques, and methods—including those used by Live Awake Mentoring—are all part of what helps us to "arrive" at this realization.
The problem is when students and teachers alike forget that the methods are not the "destination" and lose sight of what matters most. Where Live Awake Mentoring may differ from other methods is that while you're learning and using these potent skills, the reminder of what they are for is kept up front—the realization that you already are what you are seeking. Another way this has been said is "the raft is not the shore."
5. Helps you discover what’s true for yourself and live free of beliefs, dogma, or secondhand claims. You don't even have to believe in spirituality or awakening. Reality needs no interpretation. It simply is.
6. Approaches awakening as a living, ever unfolding, non-linear spiral of realization, stabilization, integration, deepening, and embodiment, rather than a "one-and-done" occurrence.
7. Grounds awakening into your relationships, soul expression, and how you contribute so it can deepen within your body and live through your everyday life. Live Awake Mentoring supports you to discover, cultivate and express your unique talents and calling—not from fear, preference, or social conditioning—but a deeper source within, that some call soul. This not only brings profound integration—it also deepens your everyday connections with "others."
These dimensions of embodied integration are explored more fully in the Live Awake One-Year Program:

Meet Robear
Founder and Teacher of Live Awake Mentoring

In 2007, something happened to music artist and guitar teacher Robert James Boswell that changed his life. Some spiritual traditions refer to this type of occurence with terms like "spontaneous spiritual non-dual awakening," "Self-realization" or even "classical enlightenment." Be that as it may, he wasn't instantly transformed into an all-knowing sage, saint, or perfected human. What did occur was a profound shift in how he perceived his "self" and reality.
What immediately followed was a two-year "honeymoon" period of unprecedented freedom and fulfillment. Freed from many of the limits of the mind, he no longer mistook thoughts and beliefs about reality for reality. He no longer believed he was not enough, had to prove anything to anyone, questioned who he was, what he's "here" for, the meaning of life—or what is spiritually true. As a result, while experiencing profound clarity, ease, openness, and joy—his life underwent a major deconstruction.
Five years later (after a series of spiritual and health crises, and increasing clarity) he began guiding people in spiritual awakening and how to live in alignment with their most cherished realizations. During this time he discovered how this awakened perception, combined with his decades of experience as a teacher, music artist, entrepreneur, and creative life-designer—could support people in bringing their inner worlds and outer worlds into harmony.
Today, through the various offerings of Live Awake Mentoring, he helps people to awaken to reality, enrich their relationships and liberate their soul expression—so they can live and create their lives around what matters most.

The Story of Live Awake Mentoring
What Years of Teaching Music Revealed About Guiding Realization

In 1982, Robear began learning to play guitar. One day while playing, he felt something greater reach in, take over, and play the music through him. From then on, he began learning not just how to play his instrument, but how to be the instrument.
By 1989, he began teaching others to train their bodies and minds to play music on the guitar, and become instruments for music, themselves. Over time, he guided more than 1,000 musicians—from beginners to professionals—helping them master the fundamentals and express their deeper selves with confidence.
In 1994, he began responding to a quiet but urgent invitation from within to come closer. Following curiosity and intuition, he entered into a deep exploration of somatic awareness. Over the next six years, this exploration evolved into what became the Embodied Presence Process—steps that would eventually lead him to taste his true nature, beyond the illusion of a limited and separate self. While this experience was profound and healing, it was also temporary—leaving no lasting shift in perception. It did, however, plant an awareness of what is possible.
In 2007, while focused on his music career, he experienced the life-changing event and recognition mentioned in the Meet Robear section above. Completely surprised by such a dramatic shift in identity and perception, he found himself wondering why this had happened to him—instead of the countless devoted practitioners who were seeking such realization. Over time, he came to see how responding to that inner call in 1994, and exploring the Embodied Presence Process, may have quietly prepared the ground for the awakening that followed.
Unlike many who become spiritual teachers, when this happened, he wasn’t seeking enlightenment or even practicing formal spirituality. Though drawn to truth and personal development since childhood, and familiar with more expansive states through music and somatic exploration, his life remained centered on experiencing oneness with everything through creating music rather than spiritual teachings and practices.
Even after this profound shift in perception, it didn’t occur to him to guide others toward awakening. His attention was almost entirely absorbed in trying to understand what had happened, how to live with it, and how to find language that could most accurately point to his direct experience.
When his search for language led him to explore teachings on spiritual awakening, he didn’t approach them as a seeker—but as someone who had already seen the reality they were attempting to point to. From that perspective, it became obvious how and why so many teachings were misunderstood—by students and, unfortunately, a number of teachers. He also saw how the way in which many teachings were delivered, though well-intentioned, tended to send seekers further from the truth rather than closer. This was frustrating to him, not because he needed the teachings himself, but because he could sense how many sincere people were being led in circles. That frustration is what eventually drove him to offer guidance that was both clear and grounded in direct experience.
It also became clear that having a deep realization—which many teachers have had—and knowing how to transmit it skillfully, were two very different things.
In 2009, a combination of spiritual and health crises brought everything he’d realized into a deeper, more integrated perspective. The intensity of what unfolded tested both his awakened awareness and fifteen years of somatic skills in a way nothing else had. Over the next five years, he learned how to harvest the gifts and skills buried in the pain and suffering—deeper humility, compassion, and insight. This became central to how he would support others through their own crucibles. (To understand more about spiritual crisis and how to receive support, visit our Crisis Guidance page.)
By early 2012, as the storm began to subside, the call to serve found its way into the world. What had become obvious was that many people were suffering—not because awakening was unreachable, but because clear skillful guidance was so hard to find. What they needed was teaching that was in plain language, honored their humanity, and offered more effective transmission. As Robear began sharing what he had learned, he discovered how fundamentally his background in teaching had equipped him to help others not only recognize truth—but embody it.
In 2015, drawing on decades of experience, his focus shifted from developing the art and skill of making music to the Art and Skill of Living Awake—tools, frameworks, and practices designed to support awakening through clear language, body-based learning, and direct experience, without confusing spiritual jargon.
Then, in 2020, a car accident and resulting head injury disrupted his equilibrium once again. Racing thoughts, sleep disturbances, and trauma arousal resurfaced. Around the same time, he also experienced extreme challenges and loss in his personal life, including the suicide of a close family member and the near-death of another—within the same two weeks. These experiences revealed how even stable awakened awareness can be shaken by crisis—and how the impact of such events, when met with embodied presence and clear perception can be transmuted into both deeper realization and service.
From this crucible emerged a number of new expressions offered through his work—Essence Relating, the Live Awake Program Levels 3 - 5, the 3Wave Dance music format, and the OneBody Dance community in Boulder, Colorado. Each arose organically from his own journey, created to support people in embodying presence and living awake, together.
Today, Robear continues teaching and refining Live Awake Mentoring both in Boulder and worldwide online. With a vision of making embodied awakening guidance as accessible as therapy or coaching, he developed the Live Awake Mentoring Program (LAMP) to cultivate teams of skilled mentors and lead teachers who can carry the work forward—far beyond his own lifetime—into the lives and communities where decisions shape the wellbeing of millions, and perhaps even more.
